About the Project

This vibrant neighborhood offers a variety of restaurants, bars, businesses, and other entertainment that residents and visitors love. We want to preserve this area while enhancing safety and comfort for people walking, in addition to those bicycling and driving.

The Federal Blvd Pedestrian Improvements Project will design pedestrian improvements along Federal Blvd from 23rd to 27th Avenues, as well as 25th Ave between Federal Blvd and Elliot St.

Improvements include curb ramps, pedestrian crossing signals, sidewalk expansions, green space, gathering areas, and other enhancements that prioritize a safer and more comfortable experience for you.

What We've Heard from You

In August 2021, the project team promoted a self-guided online questionnaire and held a pop-up event at the Federal Coffee Shop to share design concepts for this project. We asked for feedback on the potential public enhancements and the look-and-feel of the area. Below are the results.

89% of responders are excited about pedestrian improvements in this area.

Potential Public Enhancements:

  • 81% of responders want planters and landscaping amenities
  • 70% of responders want litter bins throughout the area
  • 56% of responders want enhanced RTD customer waiting areas

What We've Heard from Stakeholders

This project team also engaged a variety of area stakeholders between April and December 2021 to help refine the project conceptual design.

Here’s what we’ve heard:

Safety

  • Improve pedestrian safety and comfort
  • Increase safety for vehicles on Federal Blvd

Convenience

  • Minimize construction impacts to the extent practicable
  • Improve the business and customer experience, including access to parking
  • Create a flexible street that is excellent as a street and closed down on festival days

Sense of Space

  • Create spaces where people want to be
  • Maintain historic character of Highlands, but look to the future
  • Public art should be included in the project and reflect the community

Coordination

  • Create a unified feel along Federal and along 25th with consistent features
  • Coordinate all work with Denver Fire Department, RTD, and CDOT

Where are we now?

Our team analyzed what we heard from you, our partners, and other stakeholders to help us refine a draft design for Federal Blvd between 23rd and 27th Avenues, as well as 25th Ave between Federal Blvd and Elliot St. The designs follow various design standards and restrictions to make implementation successful in the future.

Let’s take a look at the recommended improvements and designs for this area.
